Action Needed for Some Clients: IRS Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN)

As we prepare for the upcoming tax filing season, we want to share an important reminder regarding IRS Identity Protection Personal Identification Numbers (IP PINs). This information applies only to individuals who have previously been issued an IP PIN by the IRS.

Do You Use an IRS IP PIN?
If you have been assigned an IP PIN in the past, please note that the IRS issues a new six-digit IP PIN each year. If this applies to you, you should receive your new IP PIN in January.

If you receive an IP PIN, please include a copy with your 2025 tax information so we can file your return accurately and avoid processing delays.

How to Check for and Retrieve Your IP PIN
By Mail:  If you did not opt in to online delivery, the IRS will mail a CP01A Notice in late December or early January.
Online:  If you enrolled to receive your IP PIN online, you will not receive a paper notice. Instead, log in to your IRS Online Account and retrieve your IP PIN from the “Profile” section beginning in early January.

If You Cannot Locate Your IP PIN
Online (fastest option):  Use the IRS “Get an IP PIN” tool through your IRS Online Account. Identity verification is required.
By Phone:  Call the IRS Identity Protection Specialized Unit at 800-908-4490 (or 267-941-1000 for international callers). After identity verification, your IP PIN will be mailed to your address of record within approximately 21 days.

Important Reminders
- A new IP PIN is generated each year and is valid for 1 calendar year.
- The correct current-year IP PIN must be used on any federal return filed during that year, including prior-year returns.
- The IRS will never contact you by phone, email, or text requesting your IP PIN.

If you are unsure whether you have an IP PIN or need assistance retrieving it, please let us know. We are happy to help.
